What Is Columbus Day?

Columbus Day falls on the second Monday of October. It marks Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Columbus Day a national holiday in 1937. Not every family or community observes it the same way. Many communities celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same date, which highlights the history and cultures of the people who lived in the Americas long before Columbus arrived.

Fun Facts About Christopher Columbus for Kids

What do you know about Christopher Columbus? When I started researching for this lesson, I was surprised by some of these facts!

His Early Life and Real Name

Columbus was born in Genoa, in what is now Italy, in 1451. In English, we call him “Christopher Columbus,” but in Italian, his name was “Cristoforo Colombo.” Christopher was always interested in the sea, and as he grew up, he became a sailor and a skilled navigator.

During this time, powerful people in Europe wanted to find faster trade routes to Asia. Columbus took on the challenge and believed he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. It took Columbus years of asking and negotiating before Spain's rulers, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, agreed to support his voyage.

The Famous Three Ships: Niña, Pinta, and Santa María

Christopher Columbus's first voyage used three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. The Santa María was the largest. The Niña and Pinta were smaller, faster ships called “caravels.”

The Santa María never made it back to Spain. On Christmas Eve 1492, it ran aground off the coast of Hispaniola and couldn't be saved. But it didn't go to waste! Its timbers were used to build La Navidad, a small settlement on Hispaniola. Columbus changed his plans and sailed home on the Niña, and the Pinta made the return trip too.

As you complete your Columbus Day activities for kids, see if your children can tell all three ships apart. It can be tricky, since the Niña and Pinta were the same type of ship and looked a lot alike!

What Columbus Actually Found (and What He Thought He Found)

Columbus thought sailing west would get him to Asia. Instead, in October 1492, his ships reached an island in the Bahamas, and later other Caribbean islands like Cuba and Hispaniola. Columbus was confused about where he had landed and insisted for the rest of his life that he had reached Asia.

We now know that Columbus did not reach Asia or land in what is now the continental United States. Many people say Columbus discovered America, but that's not the full story. Indigenous peoples had already lived in the Americas for thousands of years. Norse explorers led by Leif Erikson also reached North America about 500 years earlier.

This is quite different information than I was taught as a child, and I admit it takes some getting used to! However, history often asks us to look closer at familiar stories and ask what really happened. We can learn about Columbus's courage as a sailor and the enormous impact of his voyages while also recognizing that his arrival had serious consequences for the Indigenous peoples who were already living in the Americas.

Columbus Day Activities for Kids

Every so often, I come across a study that my kids really enjoy. Christopher Columbus is one of them! I try to squeeze the most out of their enjoyment by adding a couple of other activities that are purely for fun.

Make Paper Ships

Students can use cardstock paper to recreate the Santa María, Niña, and Pinta. Label the ships, then set sail in a tub of water. Don't expect them to last very long! This activity is inexpensive and a great chance to practice STEM skills. Here is my favorite paper boat tutorial.

Reenact the Voyage on a Map

Strengthen your children's geography skills by having them reenact Columbus's route. Use a large wall map or globe (if you don't have one, libraries often do!). Find Spain, then locate the Atlantic Ocean. Use the voyage map from the free printable pack and trace the westward journey. Find the Caribbean islands, then compare them to where Columbus intended to go. If you need to stock up on a globe or wall map, here are the homeschool supplies we use every day.

Discuss What “Discovery” Means

When I want to add critical thinking without making learning too heavy, I create a fun discussion. In my homeschool, students are more likely to talk if yummy snacks are involved! So I brew a pot of peppermint tea, add some cream and sugar, and sneakily get the ball rolling.

For Columbus Day, I focus on discovery. Questions include:

• Can you discover something someone else already has?
• Describe what discovery means to you.
• What's the best thing you've discovered?
• Why would two groups of people describe the same discovery differently?

Let's be honest — for homeschoolers, the library is a staple. That can make it feel routine and, at times, like a chore. A library scavenger hunt for kids gives them fresh eyes in a familiar place and encourages them to view the library as an adventure, not a box to check off. For busy moms, it also doubles as a field trip!

This activity is a sneaky way to get your students learning. They will naturally use their literacy skills to read and interpret clues, follow multi-step directions, understand call numbers, and learn how to use the Dewey Decimal System — all without realizing it is a lesson. Your children also develop the independence needed to navigate the library on their own, which is priceless.

How to Plan a Library Scavenger Hunt: Step by Step

If you are looking for a fun library activity for homeschoolers, this scavenger hunt fits the bill. My end goal is simple: I do not want my children to memorize the Dewey Decimal System. I want them to navigate the library with confidence, figure out where to look, and know who to ask. Here are my best tips on how to plan a library scavenger hunt from start to finish.

Step 1 — Talk to Your Librarian First

Librarians know the library better than anyone, so take advantage of their expertise! They can be your best collaborators for library scavenger hunt clues and homeschool library visit ideas. Let your librarian know how many kids will be participating, their ages, your overall vision, and when you plan to come.

I recommend contacting your librarian before finalizing any details. Ask if there are areas you should visit or avoid, and get familiar with any library-specific rules that could affect your hunt. Most librarians are enthusiastic about this kind of visit and may even offer to help design clues.

Step 2 — Choose a Theme

You do not technically need a theme, but it helps enormously when writing library scavenger hunt clues. Here are some my kids have loved:

Genre Hunt: It is easy to get stuck in a reading rut, especially as a young reader still developing your tastes. Encourage kids to explore new territory — biographies, cookbooks, fantasy, poetry, graphic novels, and mysteries all hold a lot of potential!

Seasonal Search: This is a great back-to-school activity, especially if your theme is fall or Halloween read-alouds! Many libraries also have seasonal coloring sheets or take-home crafts, which make a fun bonus scavenger hunt item.

Author Spotlight: Is there an author you want your kids to experience? I can easily think of several — Tomie de Paola, for one — that I have used as a search focus in our library scavenger hunts. This is an excellent way to teach alphabetization. Shake things up with a theme like “Books by Authors with ‘C' Last Names.”

Subject Hunt: Consider the subjects your homeschool is studying and make that your scavenger hunt theme. Examples include sharks, apples, weather, space, American history, oceans, and animals.

Holiday Theme: Skip expensive holiday activities and celebrate at your local library. Create scavenger hunts around Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter, or St. Patrick's Day. Older children can even search for holiday-related cookbooks.

If you do not have the capacity to create a theme, that is fine! A general library skills hunt is a wonderful choice, especially for a child's first time.

Step 3 — Write Your Clues by Age Group

It is no secret that different age groups thrive with different challenges. The perfect library scavenger hunt clue for a 12-year-old looks very different from the ideal clue for a kindergartner.

Younger children love visual clues. Middle-grade children should dive into navigation and research. Older children should handle multi-step challenges. The perfect clue is challenging but not frustrating. Multiage homeschooling families can have kids work independently or pair older children with younger ones for a buddy-system approach.

Step 4 — Gather Supplies and Set the Rules

Plenty of expensive scavenger hunt kits exist, but I prefer to keep it simple. All you really need are printable clue cards, pencils, a library card, and a bag for the books kids want to check out. I have used a grocery bag in a pinch!

The first time I ran a library scavenger hunt, I forgot to set rules in advance. You can imagine the sibling bickering that followed! Now I share a few guidelines upfront: no running, quiet voices, keep your area neat, and stay within designated areas. Decide in advance whether kids should physically collect the books they find or simply write down the title and call number — especially if you do not want 50 library books in circulation!

Library Scavenger Hunt Clue Ideas by Age

Here are tried-and-true library scavenger hunt clues that have worked well across different ages and skill levels.

Ages 4–6

This age group needs simple visual clues that deliver quick wins. Possible clues: Find a book with your favorite animal on the cover. Find a book that is your favorite color. Find a book with a number in the title. Find the children's librarian and ask her one question.

Picture-based clue cards with little to no text work best here. Do not worry about the Dewey Decimal System at this stage — the goal is helping little ones discover the joy of reading and feel at home in the library.

Ages 7–10

Middle elementary is the perfect time to start learning how to navigate the library for real. Focus on the difference between fiction and nonfiction, call numbers (the letters and numbers on a book's spine that show where it belongs on the shelf), basic computer research, and an overview of the Dewey Decimal System.

Possible clues: Find a nonfiction book about cats. Find a book in the 500s section. Use the computer to find a biography of your favorite athlete. Ask the librarian where to find a book about weather.

Ages 11+

Older students have an advantage — they can record books they find rather than lugging them around the library. Create a more challenging hunt with multi-step clues.

Possible clues: Find a biography of someone born before 1900. Find two books that cover the same topic from different angles. Use the library catalog to find a specific book, write down its call number, then locate it on the shelf. Find three non-book resources the library offers (databases, local newspapers, digital lending, etc.).

Keep in mind that these age groups are a loose guideline. Every student progresses differently — some may need more advanced or easier clues regardless of age.

I used to think fire safety was not as important as other safety topics — then a rogue firework made me rethink that. In the heat of the moment (no pun intended), my daughter floundered. She had no idea what to do beyond hide.

Since that day, I make it a point to intentionally teach fire safety each year. I have found the best time to add a fire safety study to my homeschool is during Fire Prevention Week, which falls on October 6–12. Libraries and children's programming naturally focus on fire safety during this week, so my students are already thinking about it.

Key Fire Safety Concepts to Cover with Your Kids

Wondering what your kids should actually know about fire safety? Here is your cheat sheet. These are the most important concepts to practice before Fire Prevention Week ends.

• Stop, Drop, and Roll: If a child's clothing catches fire, they need to stop what they are doing, drop to the ground, and roll until the flames go out. Practice this physically — it sticks much better than just talking about it.
• What to Do When a Smoke Detector Goes Off: Kids need to recognize the sound of a smoke detector and understand the game plan the moment one goes off. Does your child know that sound?
• Never Hide From Firefighters: Stranger danger does not apply here. Children should be able to identify a firefighter and feel confident going to them — even if the protective gear looks a little scary at first.
• Family Escape Plan and Meeting Point: Every family member should know where the fire exits are in your home and have one agreed-upon place to meet outside in case of emergency.
• 911 Procedures: Children should be able to call 911 and give their name and address before explaining the emergency. Remind kids that 911 is only for real emergencies and should never be done as a joke.

Fire Safety Activities for Kids

Fire safety can be tricky for parents who want to give their children tools without spreading fear. My daughter struggles with anxiety, and giving scary topics a fun twist helps concepts stick without sending her into a spiral. A mix of activities works best for us, so I have included our favorites below.

Do not feel like you have to do everything. Evaluate your child's learning style and choose what fits their personality and your capacity.

Practice Stop, Drop, and Roll

Hands-on practice is the best stop drop and roll activity for all ages. I keep it simple and lighthearted: clear a space on the carpet, demonstrate what Stop, Drop, and Roll looks like, then let kids repeat the steps until it feels like second nature. The NFPA recommends: Stop (do not run), Drop (drop gently to the ground), Roll (roll over and over until the fire is out). Best for: all ages.

Draw Your Family Escape Plan

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns that you may have as little as two minutes to escape after the smoke alarm sounds. That means every family member should know the escape plan without hesitation. Together, use our free printable fire escape plan to identify two ways out of each room and draw arrows showing the escape routes. Then choose your family's outdoor meeting spot. Best for: ages 5 and up.

Smoke Detector Scavenger Hunt

One day I asked my then-preschooler where our smoke detectors were. She walked me to our carbon monoxide monitor. Needless to say, we went on a smoke detector scavenger hunt — walking through the house, counting detectors, and testing them so the kids know exactly what that alarm sounds like (and how it is different from other sounds in the house). Best for: all ages, especially preschool.

Role-Play Calling 911

This fire safety lesson for kids doubles as a life skills lesson. Mom or Dad plays the role of 911 operator, asking questions like: What is your name? What is your emergency? What is your address? Is everyone outside? We use a play phone to make the role-playing scenario feel more realistic. Best for: preschool–2nd grade (though every kid can use a refresher).

Fire Safety Sorting Game

Kids ages 3–8 especially love this one. Create laminated cards showing safe and unsafe behaviors. Step 1: Choose Your Meeting Spot

Pick one permanent location that is safely away from the house — somewhere everyone knows, like the end of a long driveway or a neighbor's mailbox.

Step 2: Review Your Escape Routes

Pull out the free fire escape plan printable and walk through the two possible exits from each room. Make sure even the youngest family members know their options.

Step 3: Tell the Kids What You Are Practicing

If you have younger children, a heads-up that a fire drill is happening can reduce fear. It can be hard for preschoolers and early elementary kids to separate what is real from what is practice. Some parents prefer surprise drills — do what works for your family.

Step 4: Start the Drill

Make it feel realistic by setting off the smoke alarm. Everyone moves toward the exit immediately and heads to the designated meeting spot. The end goal: everyone gets out quickly and stays out.

Step 5: Account for Everyone and Discuss

Do a quick headcount. Talk about what worked and what needs adjusting — you may find some escape routes need tweaking. Emphasize that no one goes back inside for anything.

Practice at least once a quarter to keep these concepts fresh. You do not need to make it complicated; you just need to make it happen.

Getting outside is one of the most memorable ways to honor veterans with young children, and most communities offer at least one option worth attending.

While most communities don't have kindergarten Veterans Day activities specifically, they do have ways your child can participate. Check out your town's official website for information on Veterans Day parades, veterans memorials, and community services where they observe a moment of silence.

My family will also place flags on the gravestones of relatives who were service members. This is a great activity for little ones who are always on the move! I like to pair the placing of the flags with a little family history, too.

For example, one of the worst things I did was try to turn this short writing sprint into a marathon. My daughter could not push out another word, no matter how much I pried. I've found that 10-15 minutes is the sweet spot for us, but you can end your writing session when you notice your student is no longer enjoying it.

If your student struggles to find the right words, have them try to draw a picture first, then write about it. This can help them organize their thoughts. Keep your expectations realistic and be willing to accept imperfect punctuation, grammar, and spelling while still calling attention to errors. Focus on your student's progress and effort.
