If you’ve searched for a “Homeschool Day” online, you’ve probably seen the same thing: bright schedules, tidy desks, and children smiling over perfectly sharpened pencils. It looks calm. It looks planned. It also can make a normal parent on a normal Tuesday feel like they’re already failing.

Now picture something else. Coffee cooling on the counter because it got reheated twice. A math book open to the same page as yesterday. The dryer thumping in the background. Someone can’t find a sock. Someone else is building a tower out of couch pillows. Learning still happens here, in small pockets, in between real life.

This is a practical, beginner-friendly look at what a homeschool day can actually look like, with movement, noise, small wins, and the kind of flexibility that makes the day work.

The Myth of the Perfect Homeschool Day (and Why It Feels So Loud Online)

The “perfect” homeschool day is often a highlight reel. It’s a clean photo of a moment, not the whole story. You don’t see the argument over handwriting. You don’t see the child who slept poorly. You don’t see the parent googling “how to teach long division” at midnight.

It’s easy to compare your behind-the-scenes to someone else’s best clip. That comparison doesn’t inspire most people, it just makes them tense. And tense teaching rarely goes well.

A homeschool day doesn’t need to look impressive. It needs to work.

Why online schedules can feel intimidating

A lot of shared schedules leave out the parts that don’t fit in a square photo:

The toddler who dumps the bin of blocks right before reading time

The day you spend at a doctor’s office

The unexpected call from work

The meltdown that shows up because it’s Wednesday and everyone’s hungry

Many posted schedules are snapshots. They might be true for that family during that season, with those ages, and that level of help. They’re not a rulebook.

Here’s the simple reminder that helps most new homeschool parents breathe again: you only need a plan that fits your family.

Structure helps, rigidity hurts

Structure is a steady rhythm. It’s the set of “we usually do this next” moments that help everyone feel safe. Rigidity is a strict clock that turns the day into a race.

A structured homeschool day might sound like: “After breakfast, we do a short read-aloud and math.”
A rigid homeschool day sounds like: “At 9:00 sharp, everyone sits, no exceptions, no matter what happened last night.”

One gives you a path. The other gives you pressure.

Helpful daily anchors often look like normal life, not school bells:

Breakfast and a quick tidy

Read-aloud time (on the couch counts)

Outside time

Quiet time (even if it’s just 20 minutes)

Dinner prep (kids can join, or you guard it)

Anchors don’t trap you. They hold the day together when it wants to drift.

Take this free quiz to discover if homeschooling is right for you and your family.

A Real-Life Homeschool Day: A Beginner-Friendly Look From Morning to Afternoon

Every family’s homeschool day will differ, but most days have a similar feel. There’s a start-up phase, a focused stretch, a messy middle, and then a wrap-up that never looks like the plan you wrote on Sunday night.

Below is one realistic flow from morning to afternoon. It’s not meant to be copied. It’s meant to make you think, “Oh, we could do that.”

Morning rhythm: start slow, then focus

Mornings often begin with the basics. Food first. A little light in the room. A check of the mood.

You might start with breakfast, then a simple chore to reset the space. Nothing big. Just “everyone brings dishes to the sink” or “throw laundry in a basket.” The goal isn’t a spotless house. It’s a calmer start.

A quick morning check-in helps too. It can be as simple as:

What do you want to finish today?

What feels hard today?

What do you need first, food, movement, or quiet?

Many families add a short movement break before the hard stuff. Ten jumping jacks. A walk to the mailbox. A silly dance while the timer runs. Kids focus better when their bodies aren’t begging to move.

Then comes the focused block. This is where a lot of parents put the hardest subjects, often math and reading. Not because mornings are magical, but because attention is usually better before the day fills up.

This is one of homeschooling’s underrated wins: lessons can be short and still stick. A 15-minute math lesson with one-on-one help can beat 45 minutes of frustration at a table.

Common bumps still show up. One child needs extra time to wake up. Another is hungry again. A pencil breaks and somehow it’s the end of the world. A homeschool day doesn’t avoid those moments, it makes room for them.

Learning happens in the middle of real life

This is the part many people don’t picture. In a homeschool day, learning often happens between the planned pieces, not just inside them.

Reading might happen on the couch with a blanket that smells like last night’s popcorn. Your child reads one page, then you read one page. A younger sibling crawls over the book, and you keep going anyway. It counts.

Math can show up while you cook. “We need two cups of rice, but this scoop is half a cup. How many scoops?” Your child counts, pours, checks, and feels smart because the answer turns into lunch.

Writing might look like a grocery list on a sticky note. You spell “strawberries” out loud, and your child tries it, crossing out letters and trying again. It’s not a five-paragraph essay, but it’s real writing for a real purpose.

A walk can turn into science without you trying. The sidewalk is wet, but it didn’t rain. Your child points to the gutter. You notice the slope of the street. You talk about where water goes and why. Later, they draw a quick sketch in a notebook, a “nature note” with a messy picture and one sentence.

History can come through stories. An audiobook plays while someone builds with LEGO bricks. You pause once to explain a word. Later, your child acts out a scene at the kitchen sink, using a spoon as a sword. It’s loud, but it sticks.

Not all learning looks like a desk. In a homeschool day, the house becomes a set of small learning spaces, the table, the couch, the porch steps, the driveway chalk.

Breaks, flexibility, and downtime are part of the plan

Breaks aren’t a reward for good behavior. They’re how many kids stay steady enough to learn at all.

When kids push through too long, you get the signs: sloppy work, tears that don’t match the problem, snapping at siblings, the “I can’t” that shows up fast. A short break often fixes what a lecture can’t.

Good breaks are simple and short. They don’t need a screen to work (though screens can have a place too). A few options that fit into most homeschool days:

Snack and water

Trampoline time or a quick backyard run

Drawing, clay, or a small puzzle

Free play with a timer

A quick chore like feeding a pet

Many families use short lessons, then circle back later. You might do math, then take a break, then do spelling, then go outside, then return for a read-aloud. It can feel like you’re not doing “enough,” but the work adds up.

Some days stay light. Maybe a child is sick, or you had a rough night, or everyone’s patience is thin. A lighter homeschool day still counts when you keep the essentials: read together, practice a bit of math, get fresh air, and call it good.

What Changes Your Homeschool Day From One Family to Another

Two homeschool days can look nothing alike and both can be healthy. The rhythm depends on age, work, health, and even the month of the year.

Instead of chasing someone else’s schedule, it helps to notice what shapes yours.

Age and learning stage change everything

Early elementary often works best with short lessons and lots of play. Attention spans are smaller, and kids learn through doing. A homeschool day at this age might include phonics, a read-aloud, a bit of math, and then hours of building, pretending, and moving.

Middle school often shifts the load. Kids can work longer, read more on their own, and manage checklists. The day might include longer blocks, independent work, writing, and projects that take a week instead of a morning.

Toddlers change everything too. If you have a 2-year-old underfoot, your homeschool day will have interruptions. That’s not a failure, it’s the stage you’re in.

With multiple kids, your attention gets split. One simple tip for mixed ages: keep one shared piece (like a read-aloud), then stagger independent work. Rotate who gets you first, not who yells loudest. Over time, kids learn the rhythm.

Parent work schedules and family responsibilities set the rhythm

Homeschooling doesn’t happen in a bubble. Jobs, appointments, therapy sessions, and caregiving all set the beat.

Some common patterns look like this:

Work-from-home parent: School in the early morning, then quiet time during calls, then a short wrap-up later.
Part-time work: Focused lessons on work-free mornings, lighter afternoons for reading and errands.
Full-time job or shift work: School on off-days, evenings for reading, and weekends for projects.
Co-ops and classes: A couple of fixed days each week, with flexible home days built around them.

Consistency matters more than the hour on the clock. If your homeschool day starts at 7:30, 10:00, or after lunch, the bigger question is whether it repeats often enough to feel normal.

Energy levels, seasons, and hard weeks matter

A homeschool day in October can feel nothing like a homeschool day in February. Winter can bring low light and cabin fever. Summer can flip the schedule, with early mornings and long afternoons outside.

Hard weeks hit too. Illness. New babies. Family grief. A parent’s health flare. Burnout. When that happens, the best homeschool plan is often a “minimum.”

A gentle minimum might be:

Read together (even 10 minutes)

Basic math practice (small and steady)

Fresh air, even a short walk

Watch for overload signs in both parent and child. If you dread the day before it starts, if tears show up daily, if everyone’s snapping, that’s not a character flaw. It’s a signal to lighten the load, shorten lessons, and rebuild confidence.

A Homeschool Day Is Not a Performance

A homeschool day isn’t a performance, it’s a lived-in routine that bends to fit your family. Some days will feel smooth, and some days will feel like herding cats, but learning can still take root in both. Keep a few anchors, add a focused block, and let the rest of the day hold real life without guilt. If you want a simple next step, pick two anchors for tomorrow (breakfast and read-aloud works well), then add one subject block and stop there. Your Homeschool Day can be simple, flexible, and still deeply effective.

It’s a tired weeknight, the kitchen table is sticky from dinner, and your child is fighting tears over homework you don’t even understand. You try to stay calm, but your patience is running on fumes. In that moment, the thought slips in: can i really homeschool?

A lot of parents picture homeschooling as something only “teacher types” can pull off, the super-organized, the always-patient, color-coded families. Real life doesn’t look like that. Real life looks like laundry piles, work emails, and kids who learn in bursts and bumps.

This isn’t hype. It’s clarity. Here’s what homeschooling takes, what it doesn’t, and what many parents only learn after they’ve already started.

Why So Many Parents Ask, “Can I Really Homeschool?”

That doubt is common for a reason. Most of us were raised to treat school as the default, and anything else as risky. Add in outside opinions, and it can feel like you’re trying to rebuild the wheel from scratch.

Homeschooling isn’t just a school choice. It’s also a confidence choice.

Take this free quiz to discover if homeschooling could be right for you and your family.

Cultural beliefs about school shape our confidence

Many adults grew up with a clear message: real learning happens in a classroom. There are grade levels, tests, and a teacher at the front who “knows.” If you didn’t train for that role, it’s easy to feel unqualified.

But home learning isn’t about becoming a mini-school. It’s about knowing your child well enough to help them grow, then finding tools that support that growth.

It can help to name the hidden scripts you might be carrying:

“If my child isn’t on grade level, I failed.”

“A good parent can teach every subject.”

“If it doesn’t look like school, it doesn’t count.”

Those ideas sound firm, but they’re not facts. They’re habits of thought.

Comparison feeds self-doubt faster than facts do

Online, homeschooling often looks polished: calm children, perfect crafts, smiling parents. Even in real life, stereotypes creep in. People assume you need a big house, a stay-at-home parent, or a child who loves worksheets.

At home, learning often looks more ordinary. It can be messy. It can be loud. It can be a five-minute chat in the car that clicks more than a full lesson.

Try this quick prompt: When you picture “homeschooling,” what do you see first? A classroom at your table, or a child learning through real days and real questions?

Your picture matters, because it shapes what you think you must copy.

What Homeschooling Actually Requires, and What It Doesn’t

Homeschooling has real responsibilities, but it also has room to breathe. It can fit many types of families. Before you decide, read your state’s homeschool rules and basic reporting needs. After that, most choices are yours.

You don’t have to copy school at home

School is built for groups. Homeschooling is built for one family. That changes everything.

Home learning can include short lessons, read-aloud time, hands-on projects, co-ops, online classes, nature walks, field trips, and plenty of discussion. Kids can learn without a bell schedule. They can also learn in fewer hours than a school day, because there’s less waiting, fewer transitions, and more one-on-one time.

A simple day can look like this:

Breakfast and a read-aloud on the couch

Math practice for 15 to 25 minutes

A writing task (a paragraph, a letter, a journal page)

Lunch, then a science video or experiment

Outside time, errands, and free play

A chapter book before bed

That’s not lazy. That’s focused.

You don’t need to know everything on day one

Parents often assume homeschooling means standing at a whiteboard all day. It doesn’t.

Your job is to guide, not lecture from morning to afternoon. You can learn beside your child, and you can bring in support when you need it.

Common supports include:

Curriculum: Open-and-go programs can carry a lot of the load.

Libraries: Books, free events, and research help.

Tutors and classes: Great for advanced math, writing, or foreign language.

Co-ops and community groups: Shared teaching, labs, clubs, and friendships.

Videos and apps: Useful in small doses, when they serve your goal.

You don’t have to be the expert. You have to be the steady adult who keeps learning moving.

You do need curiosity, flexibility, and care

Homeschooling works best when the home stays human. Credentials matter less than daily habits.

Curiosity means you ask good questions and look things up.

Flexibility means you change course when something flops.

Care means you notice stress, confidence, and connection, not just “output.”

A short checklist that matters more than a teaching degree:

Patience in small doses: you can pause, breathe, and reset

Willingness to try again: a rough day doesn’t end the story

Basic follow-through: you can show up most days

Comfort saying “I don’t know”: then you go find out

Respect for your child: you correct without crushing

Homeschooling isn’t perfect parenting. It’s showing up, then adjusting.

What Experienced Homeschool Parents Wish They Knew Early On

Many parents expect confidence first and action second. In real life, it often flips. You start nervous, then you learn what works because you’re doing it.

Most families learn as they go, one week at a time

Planning helps, but living it teaches faster. The first weeks can feel strange. Kids may test limits. Parents may over-plan. Everyone may feel like they’re “behind,” even when nothing has started yet.

Starting small can lower the pressure – many families begin with a simple 4–6 week trial focused on daily reading, steady math practice, some writing, time outdoors, and regular conversations about what’s working, which gives you real data instead of just fear.

Mistakes are part of homeschooling, not proof you failed

Homeschooling mistakes are usually normal – even boring -things like choosing a curriculum your child dislikes, doing too much too soon, comparing progress to school standards too quickly, or forgetting how much mood and attention affect learning, and most course corrections are simple: pausing for a day or two, cutting lessons in half for a week, asking your child what feels hard or easy, or adjusting one subject instead of overhauling everything – the goal isn’t to never mess up, but to recover without panic.

Confidence grows through doing, not over-planning

Small wins build trust. When you see your child finish a book, master a math skill, or explain a science idea in their own words, something shifts. You stop needing permission.

A “good enough” routine can carry a family far:

Read every day.

Practice basic math.

Write something short.

Move your body and go outside.

Then add a simple reflection habit once a week: What worked? What didn’t? What will we try next week? That keeps you moving without turning your home into a pressure cooker.

A Simple Reality Check Before You Decide

Homeschooling can be a great fit, but fit matters. A kind reality check helps you choose with open eyes.

Look at your season of life, time, and budget

Think about the hours you can protect. If you work full-time, you may need a plan that uses evenings, weekends, online classes, or a shared schedule with another caregiver. If you have younger kids at home, expect interruptions and build shorter lessons.

Budget can vary widely. Many families use low-cost options like the library, used curriculum, swaps, and free online resources. Others pay for co-ops, classes, tutors, or testing.

Also plan for breaks and backup care. You’re not a machine, and burnout helps no one.

Know your child’s needs, and your support network

Homeschooling can support many learning needs, including anxiety, attention needs, gifted learning, or special education supports. Services and access vary by location, so it’s worth checking what your state and local district offer, even for homeschoolers.

Support matters, too. A “village” might look like a local homeschool group, a trusted friend, grandparents, a co-op, a mentor, or a parent who’s one step ahead of you.

When you’re supported, hard weeks don’t feel like emergencies.

Is It Really Possible to Homeschool?

Homeschooling isn’t reserved for a rare kind of parent. It’s a set of choices, repeated with love and follow-through, even on the days when the sink is full and the math lesson goes sideways. If you want a next step, choose one: check your state rules, talk with a local homeschool group, or try a one-week sample routine at home. Doubt is common, but clarity shows up faster when you take a small, steady action.

Is homeschooling right for your child and your family? Take this short quiz to notice your child’s learning style, your family’s rhythm, and the kind of support you may want as you explore homeschooling. [HERE]

Do you struggle with how to teach long vowel sounds to kindergarten readers?

You're not alone! Long vowels can be a bit tricky for kindergarten students to learn, but with the right techniques and activities, they can be successful.

Today, we're sharing some practical tips on how to teach long vowel sounds. Follow these tips and your kindergartener will be able to confidently read and spell words with long vowel sounds in no time!

How to Teach Long Vowels to Kindergarten Students

It can be hard to teach long vowel sounds to kindergarteners. With a little bit of practice, your kindergartener will be able to read and sound out long vowel words like a pro!

What are long vowels?

In kindergarten, students learn that long vowel sounds say their names. In other words, the letter ‘a' says its name (ay), as opposed to the short vowel sound in cat (ah).

This can be a difficult concept for young students to grasp, but once they understand it, they can begin to read and spell much more easily.

The most important thing is for students to get plenty of practice reading and writing words with long vowels. With time and perseverance, they will soon be able to master these sounds.

Why Learn Long Vowel Sounds?

Long vowel sounds are important because they are often used in words that have more than one syllable.

If your child knows how to read and pronounce long vowel sounds, they will be able to read and spell words like “baby,” “music,” and “open” with ease.

In addition, many common sight words contain long vowel sounds, such as “I,” “you,” and “me.”

Mastering long vowel sounds will help your child become a better reader and speller overall.

How can you help your child learn long vowel sounds

There are a few different ways you can help your child learn long vowel sounds. One way is to sing songs that focus on these sounds. Here is a simple song you can use to teach the vowel sounds.

Another is to play games that focus on phonics, which is the process of learning how letters represent speech sounds.

You can also read stories together that focus on the long vowel sounds you want to teach. As you read, point out the words that contain the long vowel sound and have your child repeat them.

You can also ask them questions about the story to further help them engage with the content. With a little bit of practice, your kindergartener will be able to read and sound out long vowel words successfully!

Once you have made the big decision to homeschool your children, the next question in your mind will be how to rock your homeschool.

There is an abundance of information out there about what and how to teach, but perhaps not so much about how to make it as successful as possible.

Follow our tips for successful homeschooling to make your experience and your child’s as positive as possible.

Tips for Successful Homeschooling

Are you feeling a little lost when it comes to homeschooling? You’re not alone. It can be tough to know where to start, and even tougher to keep things moving forward in the right direction.

But don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Here are some tips for rocking your homeschool and having a successful homeschooling experience.

Make Learning Fun

Public school kids are required to sit at a desk most of the day. Homeschoolers can make schooling more fun than that.

We can move around, learn on the go, and more! Have plenty of fun and make learning as enjoyable as possible.

Learning can be fun for you, too, as you learn new things alongside your kids.

Have a Positive Attitude

Unfortunately, there is so much in the world that is our of our control. It can be beneficial to teach your children to approach everything with a positive attitude.

Your children will absorb your attitude and mood like a sponge. So, stay upbeat and enthusiastic, and your children will reflect it.

Keep it Simple

It's easy to get overwhelmed when planning your homeschool year. There is so much information and so many choices out there when it comes to what to teach and how.

Keep your teaching and homeschooling simple. You don’t need an educational buffet of plans, curriculums, and approaches to succeed.

Put a limit on your searching and resource collecting or you risk paralysis by analysis and do nothing!

Be Flexible

Be practical about your plans, your resources, and your curriculum. If something isn’t working, try using it another way, and if it still doesn’t work, ditch it. There is little point sticking to a curriculum you all hate just because you already paid for it.

This goes for those weeks that seem to drag and everyone feels down too. Take a day off, take a field trip, go on a picnic, head to the beach. A day off may be just what you need to revitalize everyone!

Simplify Your Life

As a homeschooling parent, you must take steps to organize and simplify your life. Limit your commitments and outside activities to keep your life simple. You and your kids will be happier.

Organize errands and out of home activities into one or two days rather than interrupting your homeschool morning every day because you need milk or have to mail a package. Adjust your schedule as your kids grow and life changes.

Limit Interruptions

Turn your phone off! We live in an age of instant communication, but your child and their learning come first. Everyone else can wait.

Inform family and friends of your schedule and keep your homeschool time sacred. That means no phone calls and no drop in visitors. Just homeschool.

Switch Off Work-Mode

If you work from home, it can very tempting to check your emails or do a couple of bits of work while your child is painting.

Don’t! Set a time for your work and a time for homeschool and keep the two separate. This keeps you engaged and prevents you from being sucked into a task that will distract you from your homeschool tasks.

Don't Be a Disctraction

Don’t be a distraction to your kids. Even if you don’t have other work to do, the temptation to sneakily load the dishwasher or take out the trash can be strong.

Don't run around doing other things while your kids are trying to study. Stay focused on your children’s education during this time.

Don't Beat Yourself Up

Have confidence and remind yourself that you can do this. If you are doing all that you can, your children will learn and be successful.

Children across the world learn in all kinds of environments. Be enthusiastic with each new day, get help when you need it, and keep going. Your children and their education will be fine.

If in Doubt…Read!

If you get stuck… read. Reading skills are the key to everything, and without them your child will never reach their full potential.

If your day goes to pot because everyone is in a bad mood or something bad happens, just take some time to sit and read with your kids.

There is no better life preserver for a day that has spun out of control than to cuddle up and read with your children.

Ask for Help

How much does homeschooling cost? The financial costs of homeschooling depend on a wide variety of factors.

Many people are under the impression that homeschooling is cheap since you don’t need to find school fees or the various costs for public school equipment and events. But that is not entirely true.

Just what are the financial costs of homeschooling?

The truth is, homeschooling expenses can be greater than if you send your child to a regular public school. However, this varies according to how you choose to homeschool, for instance, whether you use a bought curriculum or not.

The largest expense for homeschooling parents is resources. You will need to buy or plan a curriculum, to acquire textbooks, course materials, study aids and equipment such as a microscope and math manipulatives.

Secondly, you will need appropriate furniture such as tables, chairs, lighting, computer equipment etc.

Of course, these can be items you already have and repurpose for homeschooling, or you may be able to get some from yard sales or secondhand sales.

You will also need stationery, including an endless supply of paper, writing accessories such as pens, pencils, erasers, and art supplies.

The final cost may be online courses, tutors, and extra-curricular classes and activities such as dancing or music lessons. There is often a cost for these when children attend public school, but it is heavily discounted. Homeschoolers may not be able to take advantage of this but check with officials in your area.

Affordable Homeschooling

However, you can design your homeschool curriculum yourself and make it cost almost nothing. Use all the materials and resources readily available to you, for example scraps from a Creative Reuse centre or the expertise of a family friend.

By using what you already have creatively and tapping into all resources available to you, you can homeschool your child for minimal cost.

Use your local libraries and museums extensively, shop creatively at the Dollar Store for supplies, and tap into local homeschool and Freecycle networks to get as much as you can for a few dollars or even free.

There is also a wealth of material available online for free. Research the best resource libraries, lessons and courses online to see what would suit your child’s needs. Make sure you bookmark plenty for future studies too.

Follow homeschool blogs that resonate with your homeschool style and sign up for their mailing lists for recommendations and even some freebies. Many also have free resource libraries for their followers.

You can also find many fiction and non-fiction texts online or to download to your Kindle for free, but if you prefer buying books there are still plenty of ways to save. Look for local second-hand bookstores, or search online. Ask around in local homeschool co-ops and groups for people who may be selling books cheap and check out garage sales and thrift stores for suitable books too.

Your library really is your best friend, so roll up with your list of required books and ask the librarian what they can do to help. If you plan your curriculum a few months ahead of time you can be sure to collect the books and resources you need together in advance.

Finally, talk to your family and friends about what you are studying with your child. Many people will have books and other resources they will be happy to lend and may even add their own expertise for a free ‘class’ for your child.

Homeschooling can cost a lot of money, but with some advanced planning and creativity, you can bring the cost down considerably. To save money on your homeschooling costs, don’t be afraid to ask, talk to everyone you can, and look around at every opportunity for resources. That way you can educate your child without busting your budget in the process.

Homeschooling can be an expensive endeavor, with curricula to purchase, endless requirements for supplies, and field trips to pay for. However, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Here’s how to make homeschooling affordable…

How to Make Homeschooling Affordable

The cost of educating a child at home can be surprisingly high. Up-to-date textbooks, course materials, a library full of books, computer equipment, and extra furniture (book cases, desks, etc.) all cost money.

Add to this any additional tuition cost for tutors or co-op classes and the total cost can be mind boggling.

But it is possible to homeschool successfully for a more affordable cost!

Let’s start with the homeschool curriculum. Many boxed curriculum can be expensive, and need to be bought every year! However, if you look online, you can buy the same materials from homeschoolers re-selling their books second-hand.

Often, you can find learning materials and other resources without having to buy them. You can borrow books, videos, and music from the library. You can also download many educational materials online and print them out yourself.

Having a membership to your local theatre, concert hall, ballet or other cultural events can also help in cutting costs. It's often cheaper to purchase tickets in bulk or “homeschool day” tickets than to buy them for each individual event.

Sometimes, it is even possible to barter services. For instance, the mother of an 8-year old gives dance classes, and her daughter receives art lessons for free.

Homeschool support groups and co-ops can help you to divide the cost of field trips, science projects and fairs. Online homeschooling forums can also point you in the direction of free and cheap learning materials. They are also a great source of tips for making homeschooling cheaper and easier.

Homeschooling communities are a great way to pool resources and share them among the members. Many field trip venues offer group discounts. Homeschool families can go together to utilize the group price.

You can also teach your child a great deal in your home. Teach him about animals and plants in your backyard or the local garden community. Learn science and maths through baking.

Family field trips are another great resource that is often under-utilized. You could teach history by visiting historical sites, many of which are free or offer cheaper tickets for homeschoolers.

Teach science at the zoo, aquarium, or local nature preserve. Look for homeschool day tickets.

Homeschooling can be an expensive choice for parents. There are many expenses that need to be considered and the financial burden can be heavy, particularly if only one parent is working.

However, the advantages of homeschooling far outweigh the costs. By following these tips, you will also be able to make homeschooling more affordable.

Is homeschooling right for your family? There are many factors to consider when deciding to take your child out of the public school system to learn at home, not least of which is the effect it will have on your life as parents.

Homeschooling is a tremendous responsibility, but the rewards for your child and your family can be priceless. Here’s how to decide if homeschooling is right for your family…

Is Homeschooling Right for Your Family

Parents who think that they need a teaching degree to teach their child are wrong. The education children receive from a loving parent can be much greater than what they'll receive in public school.

You don’t need a teaching degree or even a college degree of any kid, just the desire to give your child a quality education. If there are subjects that you don’t feel comfortable teaching it is possible to hire a tutor for those classes.

A rewarding homeschooling experience for both you and your child requires two things. Your own dedication to teaching your children and determination. You must truly want your child to succeed and be willing to put in the time and effort it takes for your child to reach their potential.

Public school teachers are overwhelmed by the sheer number of students they must control in every class. They cannot spend the individual time with each child that is necessary to bring out that child’s best.

Teaching one-on-one also means that your child can go at their own pace without the pressure to keep up in a classroom. Public school teachers have their curriculum all laid out for them and must move at a predetermined pace so that they can get through their study programs. Even if this means moving forward before every child is ready.

You on the other hand, can make sure your child fully grasps a specific subject before moving forward. Or spend time exploring something they love in greater depth. This will allow your child the opportunity to learn as they should be learning and at a pace they can keep up with.

Homeschooling can help children blossom and bring out a child’s full potential like nothing else can. And you, more than anyone else, want your child to reach their full potential.

For many families, one of the biggest advantages of homeschooling is that you can incorporate your own religious and moral beliefs into the education. This is not something that is taught in the public school system.

You can come up with your own homeschooling curriculum which can include religious or moral beliefs. And, by taking control of a child’s education, a parent can shape their child’s value system better than anyone else.

This also means that you have total control over what your child is taught. If you consider the classics or the natural world to be of primary importance in education, you can tailor your curriculum to cover those areas in greater depth. You can also follow your child’s interests and see where it leads.

Time and flexibility is another important factor for some families. You can take a field trip anytime you desire, and vacation when everyone else is still in school.

There are negatives as well as positives to this, however. The biggest negative is that homeschooling will take up a lot of your time. Not just teaching, but also planning, organizing resources and more.

This could be a big sacrifice, especially if you are struggling financially and need to work. However, with a real desire you may be able to live without luxuries that will give you the time you need to offer your child the education they deserve. However, it is possible to make homeschooling more affordable for your family.

If you want to have more input in your child’s learning and add some moral or religious teaching to their education, then homeschooling is probably for you. The greatest thing you will need to give up is your time, but you may well consider this a sacrifice worth making for your child’s education and childhood.

The pros and cons of homeschooling are many, but if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for your family, then give it a try.

You will develop a closer bond with your kids than ever before and be able to spend time together both learning and having fun more than many families in the public school system. Is homeschooling right for your family?

Each year, I strive to set and stick to a homeschool budget for my three kids. As the kids get older, it can be tough. But it isn't impossible with three simple tips…

With the start of a new calendar year, I begin thinking about what we'll be using in our next school year.

We won't start our new school year until August, but I spend the winter months researching for the year ahead.

How to Stick to a Homeschool Budget

Homeschooling does not have to cost a fortune. It is very possible to do it very inexpensively – even free, if necessary.

Make a list of what you plan to teach each child for the upcoming year, and then use the tips below to purchase your curriculum and supplies as inexpensively as possible.

Look at what you already have.

I originally wrote this post in my 14th year of homeschooling. This year, I graduated my youngest, but the advice is still worth sharing.

Over the years, I have accumulated quite a collection of homeschool materials. Each year, when I begin preparing for the upcoming year, I pull out the homeschool totes I have stored in the basement.

I sort through the books and materials to see what I already have for the next grade. I set aside anything that is the right grade or topic {Am History or chemistry} for my plans for the year.

From that pile, I set aside things I don't want to use this year. Sometimes, what I used with one child isn't a good fit for another one. Sometimes, the materials don't fit our cycle {for history and science, for example}.

Maybe my middle son studied biology in 5th grade, but my daughter wants to study chemistry. The things I know I won't use again – ever – go in a box to be sold. The rest goes right back in the tote for next year's evaluation.

Then, I update my list by noting what I have that will work for the upcoming year. Do I need any supplemental materials – science supplies, living books, a new consumable workbook for a text we'll use?

I now add these items to my list so that I can purchase all {or most} of our supplemental materials at the beginning of the year.

Can you buy used or find freebies?

From there, I start searching online. Are there free online literature guides that I can use? What about free notebooking pages, printables or lapbooks?

Has a fellow blogger created a schedule for a particular curriculum that is on my list? Are there any free curriculum sites that will fit our course of study for the year?

If so, start marking things off of your master list by listing the site where each item can be found. Create a Pinterest board dedicated to the upcoming school year so you have all of your information in one place.

After you've found all of the freebies that you can, start searching for used curriculum. In addition to yard sales, websites like the ones I've listed below sell used curriculum or have a classified section where you can search for the curriculum on your wish list:

You may be wondering how to get started homeschooling. Here are a few simple things to consider and steps to take as you begin your homeschool journey.

Whether you've dreamed of homeschooling your kids from the start or you're making the switch after a crazy school year, getting started looks the same. Take some time to get educated about your options, create a plan of action, and prepare for your homeschool experience.

It's never too late to start planning for a new homeschool journey. You can spend all summer planning for a new year, or you can prepare on the fly if you just decided today that you want to homeschool your children.

How to Get Started Homeschooling

The decision to homeschool your child is a major one. It can be overwhelming at first, but the process isn't as difficult as it may seem.

Here are some things to think about as you start preparing for the upcoming year:

Get educated.

The first place to start is to find the homeschool laws in your state. You can find a lot of information about laws in your state on the HSLDA website.

One you've determined your state's laws, it's time to decide what to teach in your homeschool. I've written before about this topic.

You'll also need to determine whether you're going to use a prepackaged homeschool curriculum or if you're going to piece together your own program.

Finally, now that you know what you're going to teach and what type of curriculum you prefer, it's time to start choosing your homeschool curriculum.

Start planning.

Now, it's time to start shopping for your homeschool. This doesn't have to be an overwhelming process. Once you've searched your home for books and supplies, you can shop stress-free for the rest of the books and curricula you will need this year.

Create your routine.

Decide how you're going to structure your day, week, month, and year. Your daily routine will depend on a variety of things. How old are your kids? Do you have outside commitments to work around? How much hands-on time do your kids need with you?

Those same questions will help you work on a weekly schedule, too. Will you try to teach each subject every day? Will you follow a 4-day or 5-day plan? Are you going to schedule field trip or co-op days each week?

Monthly schedules should take into consideration holidays, doctor's appointments, and family travel. Will you build in a catch-up day?

For your yearly schedule, determine whether you will follow the traditional school schedule or school year round. Or, will you create your own routine to fit your family's needs?

Prepare your home environment.

If you have time, do a deep cleaning of your home and your homeschool space. Getting started in a space that is free of clutter and chaos will make the start of your journey much smoother.

Determine where you'll homeschool. Will you have a dedicated homeschool room or will you homeschool wherever you can? Will your kids work at desks or at the kitchen table?

Wherever your learning space will be, stock that area with your supplies. I've homeschooled out of crates at the kitchen table. I've stored our homeschool supplies in hall closets. In later years, I had a dedicated homeschool room which housed all of my books and supplies.

Trust the process.

You've decided to homeschool for a reason. Realize that some days will be extremely difficult and make you question your decision. It's inevitable. Some days will be so easy that you'll feel like a rockstar! These day are inevitable, as well.

On those tough days, remember your whys. Adjust your focus, and rediscover the joy of homeschooling.

On those days you feel behind in your homeschool, just keep going. It's okay! And, you may find that you aren't actually behind.
