• Camping – Mr. Magee and his dog, Dee, are headed out for a camping trip. Ask kids if they’ve ever been camping. What was their favorite part? You can talk about safe camping practices (keeping food safe, leaving no trace behind, etc.). You could also set up a backyard campout for your kids.
• Wildlife – As you read the story, kids can notice the wildlife Mr. Magee and Dee encounter on their campout. In addition to the marshmallow-loving bear, each two-page spread shows trees, flowers, and animals that live in the woods.
• Pets – Dee is Mr. Magee’s pet dog. Do your students have pets? What chores do they have to help care for the pet?
