Kids will cut straight lines, curved lines, and zig zag lines. Using scissors to cut each type of line works a different set of finger, wrist, and hand muscles as kids turn their hand to cut each one.

Teaching Scissor Skills

If you want to use these for tracing practice, you can laminate them so they can be used over and over again. Have your children complete the pages with a dry erase marker.

Spring Discussions: The images on these pages can spark conversations about spring things. Talk about flowers and birds and butterflies. Can your child find these things on your next nature walk?

Colors: Can your child name the color of each line? If so, you can introduce alternate names for each color. Use terms like lavender, lime, and aqua instead of just purple, green, and blue.

Santa Cutting Printables

In order to develop the small muscles in the hands and fingers, young children need lots of practice with fine motor activities such as cutting, pasting, tracing, pinching, and more.

Why include cutting printables?

Cutting printables provide children with an opportunity to strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

First, when you provide your child with a pair of child-sized scissors made for them, you can teach them how to properly hold their scissors.

Next, you can teach them how to hold the scissors in one hand and the paper the other.

Finally, they will practice cutting the dotted lines from the bottom of the page to the big black dot.

Remember, cutting on the lines is a difficult skill. So, start with straight or slightly curved lines. Print these pages as often as needed until your child is proficient.

Gradually increase the difficulty of the lines. Starting with the simplest lines and gradually making them harder allows your child to succeed over and over again!

How else can you use these printables?

You can use these Christmas printables as coloring sheets if you print them on white paper. After coloring Santa's face and hat, kids can complete the cutting practice portion.

If you want to use these as simple cutting practice pages, you can print them on colored printer paper for a fun twist.

If you need tracing practice pages, these pages can work for that, as well. Laminate them or slip them in a dry erase pocket, and let your kids practice tracing the lines from top to bottom with a dry erase marker.

Thanksgiving Cutting Activity

When it comes to cutting practice, you can never do too much. Practicing with scissors helps develop fine motor muscles in your child's hands and fingers.

Using scissors to cut on dotted lines of various patterns, helps develop coordination and gives kids confidence in their cutting ability.

Why are scissor skills important?

When you give your kids an opportunity to work with scissors, they strengthen the small muscles in their fingers, hands, and wrist.

The stronger these little muscles are, the better your child's fine motor skills will be.

Strong fine motor skills are important for tasks such as writing, cutting, snapping snaps, buttoning buttons, and more.

What is included?

There are three pages of Thanksgiving puzzles in this pack. Each page has two puzzles, and each puzzle has different types of lines to cut.

Using the printables

I suggest printing the puzzles on cardstock and laminating them for durability. Cut apart the pages until you have six Thanksgiving puzzles, but leave each puzzle intact.

Have your child choose a puzzle and cut on the dotted lines from left to right. You may need to demonstrate how to properly hold the paper and the scissors before asking your child to cut apart the puzzles.

Once the puzzle is cut apart, have your child reassemble it. This is a great way to help develop visual discrimination skills.

The puzzles are self-checking since each one is shaped differently. This means, they'll only assemble properly if all of the lines match.
