Life Cycle of a Frog

If you plan to teach the life cycle of a frog this spring, you’ll love these fun and interesting activities that you can use to teach your kids about metamorphosis and how frogs change as they grow.
Introducing the Life Cycle of a Frog
Frogs go through a process called metamorphosis as they grow and change into adults. This process happens in four stages: egg, tadpole, froglet, and adult. Each stage has unique physical features and serves a specific purpose in the frog’s life cycle.
Once you’re done teaching the life cycle of a frog, you can use this information to help students learn about the life cycles of other animals too!
The Stages of the Frog Life Cycle
Let’s take a closer look at the life of a frog, from egg to adult. You might be surprised by what we find!
Stage 1 – Eggs: In early spring, an adult frog will lay hundreds of tiny eggs in shallow water. The developing frogs are called embryos. The eggs clump together into groups called frogspawn.
The baby frog starts out as a tiny black dot surrounded by substance similar to clear jelly.
Stage 2 – Tadpoles: After spending a few weeks in the egg, baby frogs hatch. Right now, the babies are called tadpoles. They have no legs, but they have gills for breathing and a long tail for swimming.
In the beginning, the tadpoles don’t move around very much. But, as they grow, they feed on plants. They still can’t go on land yet.
It takes a tadpole about 14 weeks to grow into an adult frog. First, the tadpole will grow back legs and then its front legs. As its legs grow, its tail shrinks.
As it continues to grow, skin grows over its gills and their lungs develop so they can survive on dry land.
Stage 3 – Adult: Now that the tadpole has lost its tail, grown its legs, and developed lungs… it’s a full-grown adult.
Adult frogs live on land but like to get in the water occasionally. Before long, female adults will look for water to lay her own eggs and the cycle begins once again.
Frog Life Cycle Cut and Paste
Now that you’ve taught your kids all about the life cycle of a frog, let them complete the worksheet featured below to review the stages you’ve taught them about.
This worksheet is a great way to teach new vocabulary words to your kids. Life cycle of a frog vocabulary includes embryo, froglet, adult, tadpole, adult, and frogspawn.
Print the first page on cardstock and laminate for durability. Use this page as a visual as you teach the various stages of the life cycle.
Then, give your child a copy of the second page. Have them cut out the life cycle of a frog sequencing discs at the bottom of the page.
Next, they’ll glue the discs in order from egg to adult to sequence the life cycle of a frog. Finally, have them label each disc.
They can then use the first page to check their own work.
