Humpback Whale Facts for Kids

Humpback whales are large aquatic mammals. They live in all oceans except for the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and can be seen close to shore near coasts during certain seasons.

Humpback whales are some of the most acrobatic animals in the ocean; they often display breaching behavior and slap their fins or tail on the surface of the water.

Life Cycle and Migrations

The lifespan of humpback whales is typically about 50 years. Females reach maturity after 5-10 years with males reaching maturity later at 10-12 years.

The breeding season for humpbacks lasts from summer to fall and pregnant females will swim from their feeding grounds to warmer waters to give birth.

After giving birth, humpback mothers will migrate back to their feeding grounds with their calves in tow.

Diet & Predators

Humpback whales mainly eat krill, plankton and small fish such as herring or mackerels. They filter these food items out of the water using a comb-like structure known as baleen plates located inside their mouth.

Humpbacks have few natural predators but orcas (killer whales) will sometimes attack calves or young adults when given the opportunity.

Identification, Sounds & Behavior

Adult humpbacks can be identified by their unique tail flukes which contain black and white patterning or mottles along with other markings that help distinguish them from each other.

Humpbacks communicate through a complex series of songs that can travel great distances underwater, helping them communicate even when they are far away from each other.

They also use body language like slapping their tails on the surface of the water as a form of communication.

Fun Facts About Humpback Whales

• Male humpbacks compete with each other for mating opportunities by singing songs together or clashing heads while vying for control over female mates

• Humpback whales sometimes spy hop – where they emerge vertically out of the water in order to get a better look at what's going on above before diving back down again

• Female humpbacks often cooperate with one another to protect calves from harm

By combining a 3-D model with informative text and illustrations, Uncover a Shark helps children understand how sharks have come to rule the world's oceans.

He’s silent. He has five rows of deadly teeth. Chomp! Meet the shark―the fish who ruled the deep before dinosaurs roamed the Earth! This fish has soft cartilage so he can glide, twist, and turn before his prey can say “gulp!” He can smell a single drop of blood in 25 million drops of ocean. He can feel electricity given off by his prey. He will lose and replace more than 10,000 teeth in his lifetime. Cool photos bring kids into the shark’s world. Fun facts go deep into the shark’s scary science.

Write a Great White Shark Report

After reading one of the shark books from the list above, have your child write a report. They can use their new shark knowledge to teach their friends or family all about these amazing animals!

Here are a few ideas to get them started:

What are the physical characteristics of a Great White Shark?

How does a Great White Shark's diet and eating habits differ from other sharks?

What is the typical habitat of a Great White Shark?

How do people interact with Great White Sharks in different parts of the world?

What conservation efforts are currently in place to protect the species?

Are there any threats posed to Great White Sharks by human activity?

I’ve created a fun research packet that will help your kids organize their information. On these pages, kids will find graphic organizers and writing prompts on which to record what they learn.

The final page is perfect for organizing their thoughts into a science report.

By researching Great White Sharks, kids can learn why they are so important to our oceans and discover how we can help protect this species from extinction.

They can also explore fun facts about sharks, including their diet, behavior, habitat, and life cycle.

Kids can also research Great White Shark conservation efforts and learn what they can do to help protect Great Whites in the future.

Great White Sharks are some of the most fascinating creatures on Earth—learning more about them is a fun way to explore their importance and help conserve this species for future generations.
