Children will identify twelve objects. Then, they'll circle the long vowel word that is spelled correctly. For instance, they'll choose between cake and cak. Then, they can color the pictures if they'd like.

Color the long vowel pictures.

Children will name four objects in each set. They'll color the two objects in each set that are long vowel words.

For instance, they'll color the bowl and boat in a set and leave the cow and bird uncolored.

Write the word.

Children will identify the image in each box. Using the word bank, kids will then write the name of each object on the line.

Long Vowel A Activities

Once your children have learned the alphabet and can read or sound out CVC words, it's time to move on to more complex skills such as long vowel patterns.

Teaching the A_E Pattern

“A” has several long vowel patterns. One is the “a_e” pattern. This one is the easiest to start with when you turn a CVC word into a long vowel word by adding silent “e” to the end. For example, you can turn man to mane or tap to tape by adding an e to the end of the word.

The Long A Puzzles in today's freebie help children become familiar with this pattern.

Print the puzzles on cardstock and laminate them before cutting them apart. Then, have children identify the picture and match it to the Long A word to complete the puzzle.

Teaching the AI/AY Patterns

In addition to the a_e pattern, the long a sound can be made with ai and ay.

Oftentimes, the ay pattern is found at the end of the word such as in tray and play.

The ai pattern is often found in the middle of a word such as in train and waist.

These “oftentimes” are just observations not rules.

The sorting activity in this freebie will help children identify words with ai and ay patterns.

Print the pages on cardstock and laminate for durability. Have students sort the cards according to their long a pattern. There are two sets of cards – one set includes the word, the other set does not.
