As we head into autumn, many of us are planning to teach our young kids about apples. And, in my opinion, you can’t have an apple study without mentioning Johnny Appleseed.

The free printables below will help you introduce your little ones to Johnny Appleseed while digging a little deeper into his life with your older ones.

John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was an American pioneer. He is credited with the planting of apple trees along America’s eastern seaboard.

Johnny Appleseed had a great love for apples and their cultivation. Eventually, he became a legend in his own time and was even immortalized in Walt Disney’s film “Johnny Appleseed”.

Johnny Appleseed Unit Study

Johnny Appleseed is an American legend, and he’s also a great topic for a unit study. There are many lessons that can be learned from the life of John Chapman.

He not only taught people about apple trees, but he also helped to pioneer the industry of apple farming.

This Johnny Appleseed themed unit study is perfect for kids in grades K-3. It’s designed for use in both a homeschool and classroom setting.

Field Trip Options

One of the most obvious field trips to take during a study of apples and/or Johnny Appleseed is to an apple orchard. You can learn about orchards, pick fresh apples, and even try apple fritters, apple cider, or apple doughnuts.

If you live near Urbana, Ohio, you can visit the Johnny Appleseed Museum. There you and your kid can learn all about Johnny Appleseed and his contributions.

If you live near Biglerville, PA, you can visit the National Apple Museum which has lots of information about Johnny Appleseed.
