Elf Activities

As we head into the holiday season, we like to add elf-themed Christmas activities to our day-to-day homeschool lesson plans. I'll share a few of our favorite ideas, and then I'll share some fun ideas from friends around the web.

Making Elf Hats: Help your kids make their own elf hats! All you need are some colorful construction paper and scissors. Cut out a large circle for the brim, two triangles for the ears, and a strip of paper to go around the head. Let your kids decorate it however they'd like with markers and glitter.

Decorating Elf Cookies: Another great activity for the Christmas season is decorating cookies. Not only will this be a fun and tasty way to get into the Christmas spirit, but it's also budget-friendly! All you need are some store-bought sugar cookie dough, an elf cookie cutter, frosting in festive colors, sprinkles, and any other decorations of your choice.

Teaching Sight Words in First Grade

Teaching sight words is important for first graders. Sight words are the most common words that students will see in both reading and writing, so they need to learn these words as quickly as possible.

There are a lot of different ways to teach sight words to first graders. Some of the most common ways include tracing and writing the words, saying the words out loud, and using flashcards.

All of these methods can help students learn and remember sight words more easily. Additionally, using fun and festive graphics on worksheets or flashcards can keep students engaged while they practice.

Whatever method you choose, make sure that you are constantly reinforcing the sight words so that students remember them long-term.

Elf Sight Words

The printable includes a list of common sight words as well as a space for students to trace and write each word three times.

These worksheets, complete with festive and fun elf-themed graphics, will help keep students engaged while they hone their skills.

What You'll Need

  • Pencils

  • Sight word worksheets (at the bottom of this post)

What's Included

This free worksheet packet includes five sight words worksheets. Each worksheet includes an adorable elf graphic to get kids in the holiday spirit.

On each page, kids will read, trace, and write eight first grade sight words. Each page features different words. The pack includes a total of 40 sight words.

What You'll Do

To prepare these worksheets, just print them out. If you'd like to make them reusable, laminate them or slip them in a dry erase pocket. Kids can use a dry erase marker to complete the activity.

Introduce the sight words worksheet to students, explaining that they will be tracing and writing the words three times each.

Have students complete the worksheet, tracing and writing the words as directed. Encourage them to say the words out loud as they write them.

After completing the worksheet, have students review the words they wrote.

Elf Picture Books for Kids

There are a lot of different elf picture books that can be used in the classroom to help students learn about elves and Christmas. Some of the most popular books include The Elf on the Shelf, Elf Pets: A Reindeer Tradition, and How to Catch an Elf.

All of these books are perfect for reading aloud to students, and they can also be used for literacy activities. For example, students can answer questions about the text after reading it, or they can write their own version of the story.

Additionally, these books can be used to teach other subjects. For example, The Elf on the Shelf can be used to teach math skills by having students count how many elves are in each scene.

With so many great elf picture books available, teachers can easily find a book that will fit perfectly into their curriculum.

And with Christmas just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start using them in the classroom!

Christmas crafting doesn't get any easier than this paper craft for kids. All you have to do is print, color, cut, and glue.

No mess. No stress. Perfect for busy December activity plans.

Printable Elf Craft

Because this Christmas craft requires no special supplies, your kids will be ready to make them in no time.

They are perfect for use in the classroom, at home, or during storytime at the library.

What You'll Need

What You'll Do

Print out the template (at the bottom of this post) on cardstock. I like to use cardstock, because it's sturdier than printer paper.

Have children color the pieces however they'd like. They can use Christmas colors, or they can use their favorite colors.

Once the elf is colored to your satisfaction, it's time to cut out all of the pieces. Instruct your kids to cut on the dotted line.

Younger children may need help from an older sibling or parent. But, this is a great opportunity to have them strengthen their fine motor muscles with a little scissor practice.

Now, it's time to assemble the elf paper craft. I find it easiest to start with the feet. Then, add the shirt leaving space to slip the arms under the sides of the shirt. Finally, add the head and then the hat and it's done!
