Butterfly Life Cycle

Did you know that butterflies begin their lives as an egg? After a few days, the eggs hatch and turn into caterpillars. They eat and grow until they become too big for their skin.

The caterpillars then form a chrysalis, or cocoon, to protect themselves while they change inside. When the time is right, the chrysalis split open and out comes a butterfly!

Butterflies can now fly around and enjoy life without a care in the world. They also look for food, mate and lay eggs for the next generation of butterflies!

Through this cycle of growth and transformation, butterflies are able to live full and varied lives in their natural habitats.

Explaining this life cycle to children is an important way to nurture curiosity about nature and inspire them to explore further.

The Importance of Teaching Sequencing

Butterfly Life Cycle Sequencing Activity

Have your children learn about the life cycle of a butterfly with our fun sequencing activity! This exercise can help children not just understand the stages of a butterfly's life cycle but also apply it to other processes and tasks.

What You'll Need

printer and paper
scissors and glue
crayons (optional)

Preparing the Printables

Print one copy of the sequencing mats and the retelling page for each student. Print one copy of the sequencing discs for every two students.

I like to print the color version on cardstock and laminate the pages for durability. I cut out the sequencing discs and put a velcro dot on the back of each one. I put the other half of the velcro dot on each circle on the sequencing mat.

If using the black and white version, I print on regular printer paper. The kids can color the pictures and cut/paste them onto the sequencing mat.

COMPLETING THE ACTIVITY

You can use the laminated version of this life cycle of a butterfly sequencing pack in your science centers or as an individual activity. The cut/paste version can be used as seat work.

Start by reviewing the stages of the butterfly’s life cycle. Be sure to use vocabulary words such as pupa, larva, etc.

Then, have kids place the sequencing discs on the sequencing mat in the correct order.

Finally, older students can write about the life cycle on the writing page. This page has a section for first, then, and finally.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

The life cycle of a butterfly is fascinating. Butterflies begin their lives as eggs, which are laid on the leaves of plants.

The egg hatches into a larva, or caterpillar, which begins to eat its way through the plant. As it grows, the caterpillar molts, or sheds its skin. Once it has reached its full size, the caterpillar spins a cocoon around itself and enters the pupal stage.

During this time, the butterfly undergoes a metamorphosis, emerging from the cocoon as a fully-formed adult. Adult butterflies typically live for only a few weeks, during which time they mate and lay eggs before dying. However, some species of butterfly can live for up to 12 months.

The life cycle of a butterfly is truly an amazing sight to see!

Preparing the Worksheet

This one-page printable requires no advanced preparation. Just print and go! If your kids don’t enjoy coloring, you can print this activity on colored printer paper or print the color version.

You can also make this a reusable activity by printing it on cardstock and laminating it for durability. Cut out the sequencing cards at the bottom of the page.

Add a velcro dot to the backside of each sequencing card and in each empty box on the worksheet. Then, the kids can sequence the life cycle of a butterfly over and over again.

What Skills Are Covered?

I love when one simple activity covers so many skills! That makes teaching so much easier. This worksheet does just that! But, what skills does it cover?

• Science: Children will learn how butterflies grow from egg to adult. They’ll learn new vocabulary words associated with how butterflies grow – egg, chrysallis, larva, pupa, caterpillar, etc.

• Logic: Sequencing events is a great logic-building activity. Kids learn to put things in the order that they happen. This skill helps children make sense of the world around them.

• Motor Skills: Cutting paper with scissors helps children strengthen the small muscles in their fingers, hands, and wrists.

• Hand-Eye Coordination: Gluing the sequencing cards in order (or lining them up with the velcro dots) helps strengthen hand-eye coordination. Kids will have to align the sequencing cards on the mat straight so that they all fit properly.

I know it's still winter, but I'm dreaming of spring. That means, I'm looking ahead to spring themes to include in my homeschool lesson plans.
