Bats typically live for around 20 years, but some species can live for up to 40 years.

Most bats give birth to twins, but some species only have a single pup per year.

After a gestation period of around 50 days, the baby bat is born.

Baby bats are called “pups”, and they are unable to fly when they are born.

Pups remain with their mothers for several weeks or months until they are old enough to fly and hunt on their own.

After that, they strike out on their own and begin their adult life cycle.

Bats are incredible animals, and we can learn a lot from them!

We've featured quite a few story sequencing activities here on the blog. Most of those are geared toward younger children as they only require cutting and pasting pictures from the story.

I've received a request for sequencing activities for older children, and Stellaluna is perfect for this time of year! Add it to your Halloween, nocturnal animals, owls, or bat-themed homeschool lessons.

To sequence a story, students must first read it. After reading Stellaluna, have students draw four main events from the story. They should then describe what happens in each event.

This will help them to understand the story's plot and better remember the events that took place. This activity is great for practicing sequencing and retelling a story. It can also be used to assess comprehension.

Story Sequencing

Sequencing is the ability to put events in order. It sounds simple, but it's actually a pretty complex skill.

Why Sequence Stories?

Sequencing stories helps students in a number of ways. First, it helps them understand the beginning, middle, and end of a story. This is essential for comprehension.

Second, it helps them identify the main events in a story. This is important for drawing conclusions and making predictions.

Third, it helps them understand how to sequence events. This is a valuable life skill that will come in handy in all sorts of situations.

Tips for Incorporating Sequencing into Your Lessons

There are lots of ways to incorporate sequencing into your lessons. One way is to have students retell stories that they've read or heard.

Another way is to have students put pictures from a story in order. You can also give students blank strips of paper and have them draw pictures from a story and then sequence the pictures.

And don't forget about technology! There are lots of great apps and websites that allow students to sequence stories electronically.

Stellaluna Sequencing

The goal of this lesson is to help students understand the sequence of events in a story. In order to assess whether or not students have learned this skill, ask them to sequence four events from a story. T

hey should be able to identify the beginning, middle, and end of the story, as well as the main events. They should also be able to explain what happens in each event.

What You'll Need

  • copy of the book Stellaluna
  • paper
  • crayons or markers
  • pencil

What You'll Do

To kick off this lesson, read Stellaluna aloud to your students. After reading the story aloud, discuss the plot with your students.

Hand out the sequencing worksheet. Tell students they will now draw four main events from the story.

Have them draw the first scene in the box at the top of the page. Then, once they've drawn their first event, have them begin describing what happens in that scene.

Tell students that they will repeat this process for the remaining three events. When they've completed the activity, have them share their page with you.

Finally, discuss the sequence of events in the story and how they helped to tell the story's plot.

All you have to do to prepare this activity is print them out. It’s that easy!

However, if you’d like to make them reusable, you can laminate them after printing them out.

Then, add velcro dots to the back of each cut off piece and each blank box on the page. Have children write the sentences with dry erase markers.

WHAT DOES THIS ACTIVITY TEACH?

This activity provides kids with an opportunity to strengthen their scissor skills as they cut out the pictures at the bottom of the page.

Next, they'll put the words in order to form a sentence. Give them a hint to get started, if necessary. Remind them that all sentences begin with a capital letter.

Once the sentence is glued in place, have students write it in their best handwriting on the dotted lines.

My cut and paste worksheets have been very popular here on the blog, and I'm having a blast creating new ones for you to use with your kiddos.

This set of free printables is perfect for your autumn and/or Halloween lesson plans. You can add them to your nocturnal animals unit, as well.

These bat-themed printables are perfect for kids ages 4-7. There are activity pages that help kids practice counting to ten, ordering numbers to ten, short a words, and more.

Bat Cut and Paste Activities for Kindergarten

Because these worksheets are print-and-go, they are perfect for busy moms and homeschool co-op teachers. There is no prep work involved.

Young learners will love working on a variety of math and literacy skills this fall as they practice cutting and pasting.

Preparing the Worksheets

What's Included?

Counting to Ten

Children will count the bats in each set, and then glue the correct number beside it.

Number Words

As with the first worksheet, children will count the bats in each set. On this worksheet, however, they will glue the correct number word beside each one.

Sorting by Size

Children will cut out the twelve items on the page. They’ll sort them into the correct box according to their size – big or small.

Beginning Sounds

Children will cut and paste objects that begin with the /b/ sound.

Number Order

Preschoolers will cut and paste the numbers in order from 1-10.

Short A Words

Kids will read ten short “a” words. Then, they’ll paste a picture of that word in the box.

Number Before

Children will cut and paste the number that comes before the featured numbers.

Number After

Children will cut and paste the number that comes after the featured numbers.

Bat Appreciation Day Activities for Kids

The activities featured below are perfect for not only Bat Appreciation Day but also for Halloween – when many of us incorporate bats into our daily homeschool lessons.

You'll find books, printables, crafts, and more all featuring bats. While I haven't focused on it here, you can use this as an opportunity to discuss mammals and nocturnal animals.

These Bat Appreciation Day activities are perfect for kids in grades K-3. They're perfect for both home and classroom use so co-ops can utilize these ideas, as well.

Bat Habitat

One obvious activity you can do to celebrate Bat Appreciation Day is to visit a bat habitat at your local zoo.

If you don't live near a zoo with a bat habitat, find a YouTube video to share with your kids.

Bat Science

Take advantage of this holiday and use it as an opportunity to explore echolocation. Kids will be fascinated to learn how bats hear as they play this fun game.
