How to Teach Adjectives

Adjectives are words that are used to describe nouns and pronouns. For example, the word “red” is an adjective that can be used to describe a person's hair, a tomato, or a stop sign.

By using adjectives wisely, we can paint a more detailed and accurate picture of the world around us.

Introduce Adjectives By Giving Examples

Point out an object in the room. Ask your kids to describe the object with as many descriptive words as they can.

Hold up a pencil and ask your children to describe it. They can describe its color, its size, and describe its shape. For example, yellow, long or short, round, etc.

Explain What an Adjective Is

Explain that adjectives are words that describe nouns. Yellow (pencil), hard (table), tall (chair), and smooth (floor tiles) are all adjectives because they describe nouns.

Practice Using Adjectives

You can start out with simple sentences such as “This is a pencil.” Then, see if your child can add adjectives to make the sentence more interesting. For example, “This is a yellow pencil” or “This is a short pencil”.
